Five Days in March
(Sangatsu no Itsukakann)
Written and Directed by Toshiki Okada

On March 21 (20th U.S. time), 2003, the U.S. armed forces began bombing Iraq. This play tells about the actions of young couples during the period of five days spanning two days prior to, and two days after March 21. What makes this play unique is that the actions of the young people are literally “told” rather than being “acted out” by the actors.
One of couples had just met at a live performance club in Roppongi and ended going straight from there to a hotel in Shibuya, where they spent five days in total. Going out to eat from time to time, the couple Minobe and Yukki suddenly found that they are seeing Shibuya with fresh new eyes. Then there is Minobe’s friend, the slightly weird girl Miffy and the boy Azuma whom they met at a movie theater. There are also two young men Yasui and Ishihara who are taking part somewhat half-heartedly, in an anti-war march in Shibuya.
The play’s style is carried out by seven actors come on stage as “Actor 1” and “Actor 2”, and proceed to take turns telling the audience the stories of the characters of the play, as if they had just heard the stories from the characters themselves. For example, here is what oneof the actors says: “OK. I guess I’ll begin telling the story of Five Days in March starting from day one. First of all, let's say this is set in March of last year, and this is a story of this guy named Minobe who wakes up one morning and realizes he’s in a hotel, and he’s like “Hey, I’m in a love hotel” and, not only that, there is a girl who is asleep beside him and he would say “I don’t know this chick”. In this way, the actors don’t play the roles of the characters, but simply relate their actions to the audience.
This work, which has no real plot or notable incidents occurring, is an attempt of a serious exploration of “present expression”. First of all, it removes the deceptive
theatrical element of how skillfully actors can “act out a role”, and then it tries to eliminate the artificiality that always exists to some degree in lines spoken by the actors when they are clearly from a drama-like script.
As a work born at the end of a quest for the most sincere form of expression in the present, Five Days in March skillfully juxtaposes the grand-scale event of “War” and what can be called the almost insignificant in real daily life, giving form to the elusive sense of the present held by Japanese young people.

A monologue. Mia, a girl around the age of 20, is waiting for her friend Hiroko by the window seat at a Starbucks Coffee near Yokohama station. Hiroko talks about her elder boyfriend, Kadota. Kadota offered Hiroko marijuana when they were in a hotel one day, and Hiroko was shocked. They hadnﾕt met for a while since. Hiroko is concerning if she continues her relationship with Kadota or not. Listening to her story, Mia watches a guy from the window, doing his part-time job of handing out brochures of cosmetics. The actor now starts to play the role of the guy. The actor complains as the guy. Because heﾕs doing the job absent-mindedly, he hands the brochure to a tall guy by mistake and gets cursed by him. The tall guy was Kadota. Kadota walks to Hiroko in Starbucks with horrible expression on his face. The title comes from Chekhov’s monologue “On The Harmful Effects of Tobacco”.

By the way, the woman, who is the roommate of her, is actually a married grass widow. But she has never talked about that to Kawaguchi-san.
So the two couples, one is going to marry and the other breaking up their marriage, describe the two variations of “marriage”. One could have one’s say, the other couldn't.

Highly acclaimed work, which was primarily made to take part in "We Love Dance Festival '04" (Kyoto Art Complex 1928 and Shinjuku Park Tower Hall), but turned out to make for the finals at "Toyota Choreography Award 2005" (Setagaya Public Theatre). Created by Toshiki Okada, who was then working mainly in the field of drama, "Air-Conditioner" is a piece of work made through examining dance approaches by pursuing the connection between "body" and "words"; the factors that compose staging. The clearly defined concept of the body demonstrated in the work defied the conventional idea of “choreography”, generating an enthusiastic debate among the audience.
Below is the excerpt; throughout the play, a conversation is made about the temperature setting of an air-conditioner.

F: About the air-conditioner…
M: Yes.
F: It’s a little bit cold you know, maybe too cold... in our office the temperature's always set at 23 degrees and even in strongest power, which I think is crazy if you ask me.
M: Yeah...
M: 'Cause the air-conditioner is really... you know, it's always set at 23 degrees in the strongest wind, and I think this is quite unusual, yeah I do think so... like, itﾕs almost funny, but I guess I myself is kinda person who is cold-natured, you know...
M: Ah, it may be hard for women I think, yes, it may be kinda hard for women.
F: Yeah, no, is it like "you're kinda person who is 'kinda cold-natured'" or I mean, for like women, but is that how you feel or...
M: Yeah.
F: What do you mean by that? But is it like "yeah, I guess I'm aware of that" kinda feeling? I don't know I guess, but...
M: Yeah, I know many women are like that, I feel sorry you know.
F: But yeah, I think thatﾕs the reason, I myself think so anyway.
M: Yeah, I know many women are like that, I feel sorry you know.

This is a story told in the context of some weird atmosphere; one might describe as disquietness, of 'Kohoku New Town', the large housing area in Yokohama.
A young lady thought she might have got pregnant because she had missed her period. She told the fact to her boyfriend after suffering alone. Her boyfriend actually felt impatient when he heard about that from her. He went for an advice to his senior who was already married and living in a condominium in Kohoku New Town.
By the way, this was just the same time that his senior, Miyazaki, knew his wifeﾕs pregnancy. Mr. & Mrs. Miyazaki was feeling fear and pleasure. They imagine themselves riding a Ferris wheel of the department store in new town with their child. They imagine their child gets involved in a war their country is now involved with, and gets killed by someone or kills someone. They also worry if they will be able to give birth successfully.
Before they noticed the pregnancy, the couple had been talking about having a cat, but now they decided not to. They went to a baby product store in the shopping center of New Town. The husband accidentally told his wifeﾕs pregnancy to his colleague. The wife started thinking about the cat, which they would have had for a pet.
